BISWANATH: A large area of the Biswanath district has faced problems because of the recent round of flooding. Heavy rains in the past few days in parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have led to an increase in the water levels and left huge areas under water.

Several villages located in the district, including Karbiblock, Rupa and Mainasri have been the worst affected by the water flowing down the hills and flooding several areas of the region. This had put the whole area at risk of massive flooding, triggering panic among the locals.

The recent rains and the accompanying floods have caused massive damage to the road infrastructure of the region, creating problems for the locals in terms of their daily commute. Small children and aged people are facing problems regarding their daily commuting. People of the region have asked questions regarding the actions of the state and local administration in terms of preventing flood-like situations in the state.

The Bhadia Baan (the deluge in Bhado) has worsened further in the past 24 hours due to rainfall in the upstream in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Till yesterday, only six districts were in the grip of the deluge that has affected as many as 11 districts today. The Brahmaputra is still flowing over the danger levels at many stretches: Nimatighat in the Jorhat district, Tezpur in the Sonitpur district, and Dhubri in the Dhubri district. According to the evening bulletin of the CWC (Central Water Commission), the Brahmaputra is maintaining its rising trend in Dibrugarh, Tezpur, Guwahati, and Goalpara.

Three other rivers—the Dikhow and the Dishang in Upper Assam and the Beki in Lower Assam—are also flowing over their danger levels. According to the CWC, the Dihkow is flowing above the danger mark in Sivasagar, the Dishang at Nanglamoraghat in the Sivasagar district, and the Beki at the Road Bridge in the Barpeta district. According to the ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority), the floods have affected 19 revenue circles in 11 districts in the state. The districts are Biswanath, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Jorhat, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Sonitpur, and Tamulpur. As many as 45,354 people—19,963 males, 16,279 females, and 9,112 children—are under the grip of floods in the 11 districts. As of date, the floods have affected 154 villages, and Dhemaji topped the list with 48 affected villages, followed by Sonitpur with 40 villages.
